Tunis-Carthage International Airport
Welcome to Tunisia! This is the start of your big adventure. Meet with your English/Mandarin speaking guide and private driver at the airport and head to your hotel to refresh yourself. If time remains, you can explore the historic Tunis Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Follow your guide’s lead while you weave through the medina’s streets and alleys. Along the way, pass by the famous Zitouna Mosque, spice market, and the gold souk (market). Head back to your hotel for dinner and rest.
After a refreshing night’s sleep, begin your journey to ancient Carthage, once the largest city in northern Africa. Here you will marvel at the remnants of an ancient civilization from many eras of history including the Punic, Roman, Vandal, and Byzantine eras.
Afterwards we will continue to the picturesque Sidi Bou Said, also known as the “blue and white village” situated on surrounding hills overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Take a stroll along the beautifully paved lanes with many white houses with blue roofs and windows forming a brilliant blue and white theme throughout the entire village. This is a good opportunity to take lunch here while overlooking the spectacular Mediterranean sea view.
After lunch, we will travel to the Bardo Museum in Tunis. This world-class museum contains the largest number of mosaics in the world, many dating back to the Roman period. There is also a large collection of ancient artifacts from the Punic to Islamic periods. When you are ready, we will return to the hotel for dinner and rest.
After breakfast, we will travel to the enormous Roman Archaeological site in Dougga. Dougga has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and is considered as “the best preserved Roman small town in North Africa”. As one of the best preserved Roman ruins in Tunisia, these ancient ruins stand as a testimony to over 17 centuries of history and a unique integration of Numidian, Punic, Hellenistic, and Roman cultural influences. The site overlooks its vast surrounding regions. It’s not uncommon to see locals herding their sheep through the Roman ruins. You may want to take lunch here.
Travel to the archaeological site of Bulla Regia to see Roman underground villas with well-preserved mosaics, a Roman forum, and a public basilica. Travel to El Kef to enjoy dinner at the hotel.
After breakfast, you will depart and visit the Roman site of Makthar. Here you will see a Roman Forum, Trajan’s arch, a Vandal Church, and much more.
Afterwards, visit Sbeitla with its numerous mosaics, churches, baptisteries, temples, baths, and the Arch of Diocletian. Do not forget to leave time to visit the museum. Then you will travel to the important Islamic city, Kairouan. Dinner will be at the hotel.
This morning, we will visit the grand mosque Okba Ibn Nafaa which was established in 670 AD. You will also visit the mausoleum of the Berber companion of Mohammed, and the Aghlabid pool.
Afterwards, you may be interested in a visit to a carpet-making workshop where you can observe, admire, and learn about this incredible artisan work. There is an ancient medina with winding streets, which make for a nice place to have lunch. When you have completed your visits, travel to the palm grove and Sahara region of Tozeur. Tozeur is the second largest date palm oasis in Tunisia. Dinner will be at the hotel.
After an early morning, travel to the beautiful mountainside oasis village of Chebika. Chebika was once a Roman outpost, but later became a mountain refuge for the Berber people. You can hike through the Chebika canyon to the source of the mountain oasis. From Chebika, travel to Tamerza which is the largest mountain oasis in Tunisia. Afterwards, travel to Mides where you will have a nice panoramic view of the canyon below. The canyon was used for the filming of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The English Patient. Return to Tozeur for lunch.
In the afternoon, explore Ong Jemel, ‘the neck of the camel‘. Travel over barren land and see the Sahara dunes and a Star Wars Mos Espa film location. Return to Tozeur for your night and dinner.
If there is time in the morning, visit the Eden Palms museum. Afterwards, travel across the Chott el Jerid, the largest salt flat in Tunisia, and across barren lands until you reach Douz. You will visit the Sahara museum and you may want to have lunch in Douz before departing for the beautiful oasis of Ksar Ghilane. This oasis is situated right next to the Sahara dunes. Enjoy the natural hot spring or take a quad or camel trek to a Roman fort.
In the morning, depart from the Sahara desert and travel to Matmata to visit troglodyte museum and homes. Star Wars fans will enjoy visiting Hotel Sidi Driss which was the film location of Luke Skywalker’s interior home in the original Star Wars movie. Afterwards, make your way through the mountains past the Berber village of Toujane until you arrive to Ksar Hadada. This is an ancient granary which was used as the film location of the Slave Quarters in Star Wars Episode I: A Phantom Menace.
Afterwards, travel to Chenini and wander through this historic Berber mountainside village. It is worth climbing to the top for a breath-taking mountaintop view. When you are ready, depart for Djerba Island for dinner and rest at your hotel.
You will spend this day exploring the wonders of Djerba Island. Visits will include the famous Guellela pottery town, Houmet Souk with its traditional markets, El Ghriba Synagogue (oldest synagogue in North Africa), and other sites. Perhaps you will want to order a seafood lunch prepared with the fresh catch of the day.
When you have finished the island tour, return to your hotel for rest or time at the beach.
Today is a free day for you to relax and enjoy the beautiful sunshine on Djerba Island. You might want to consider some of the recreational water activities available such as kite surfing, parasailing and scuba diving.
Morning departure for El Djem. The Roman Coliseum in this city is one of the best preserved in the world. It was constructed between 230 and 238 AD and is believed to at one time have hosted between 30,000 to 45,000 spectators. Take time exploring this enormous structure and do not forget to go down to the rooms where the gladiators waited for their upcoming battle. There is a museum in the town that hosts a plethora of mosaics.
Travel to Sousse and if time remains in the day, perhaps you would like to see the archeological museum, catacombs, kasbah, and medina. Dinner will be at the hotel.
In the morning, you will visit Hammamet, a coastal city known for its sandy white beaches, crystal clear blue sea water, and beautiful gardens.
Next, continue your journey to the picturesque Cap Bon peninsula. Here you will explore Kerkouane, an ancient Punic town and a UNESCO World Heritage site. You will visit Houaria (the tip of Cap Bon) and Korbous (a natural hot spring). When you are ready, return to your hotel in Tunis for dinner and rest.
Your driver will take you to the airport for your onward flight home, thus ending your Highlights of Tunisia tour.
